Abstract

Abstract

This study was conducted to compare the self-confidence levels of students admitted to the university through special talent examinations and to examine these levels in terms of various demographic and individual variables. The population of the study consists of all students admitted to Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University through special talent examinations. The sample includes a total of 314 volunteer students enrolled in the Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Art Education and Music Education Departments of the Faculty of Education, and the Sports Management and Physical Education and Sports Teaching Departments of the Faculty of Sport Sciences. As a data collection tool, the Self-Confidence Scale adapted into Turkish by Akın (2007) was used to determine the participants’ self-confidence levels. Since the data did not show a normal distribution, they were analyzed using non-parametric statistical techniques such as the Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis test, and Spearman correlation analysis.

The findings revealed that male participants had significantly higher self-confidence levels than female participants. Moreover, individuals who perceived themselves as talented exhibited higher self-confidence scores compared to those who did not consider themselves talented. It was also found that an increase in academic achievement had a positive effect, particularly on external self-confidence. Additionally, the presence of a family member involved in art or sports significantly contributed to the development of students’ self-confidence, enhancing their self-expression and perceived competence. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that individual perception, environmental support, and academic achievement are key determinants of self-confidence development among students pursuing artistic and sports-based education, thereby contributing valuable insights to the related literature.
